It was the inauguration of the new theatre and the beginning of an unparalleled success story. The exceptional class and success of the production justified the fact that this time Hungarian Television did not record the production in the traditional way, in the theatre, but in a studio, also directed by István Horvai, which took several days to complete. This diary is the final self-expression of a repressed man on the road to madness, living without a chance of escape, locked in himself, hopelessly in love. Gogol reveals this psychological pathology with grotesque vision and clinical precision, yet every moment of it is deeply moving and human.
