The Flame and the Arrow na bombuj. Ve dvanáctém století byla celá severní Itálie v područí armády německého císaře Fredericka Barbarossy. Ale hory Lombardie se nedaly tak snadno podmanit. V nich žije odvážný horal a vůdce povstalecké skupiny Dardo Bartoli (Burt Lancaster). Během návštěvy správce území v obci, hraběte Ulricha (Frank Allenby), dojde k potyčce mezi Dardem a hrabětem. Ten ze msty odebírá Dardovi malého syna a bere si ho do výchovy. Dardo vede povstalce proti dobyvatelům za svobodu vesničanů a svého syna.
