The Murders in the Rue Morgue na bombuj. Jedné obzvlášť temné noci probudí obyvatele pařížské ulice Morgue děsivé zvuky vycházející z domu, kde žije osamělá stará dáma se svou dcerou. Když lidé dorazí do třetího patra, odkud srdceryvné zvuky vycházely, vidí už jen stopy po masakru. Jednu z žen násilník zardousil a nacpal do komína jako panenku, druhé uřízl břitvou hlavu. Na případ jsou nasazeni nejschopnější policisté, ale vyšetřování vraždy, záhadné ve všech ohledech, zůstává stále ve slepé uličce. Naštěstí se začne podivným mordem zabývat velký policejní detektiv 19. století Auguste Dupin.
