The Return of the Soldier na bombuj. Kitty Baldryová (Julie Christieová) je ženou z vyšší společnosti s dost omezením vnímáním života. Její lhostejnost se ale změní, když se její manžel, kapitán Chris Baldry (Alan Bates), vrátí z 1. světové války, otřesený a trpící amnézií. Netuší ani, kdo je Kitty, a chce se dát dohromady se svou bývalou milenkou, dělnicí Margaret (Glenda Jacksonová). Kitty angažuje psychiatra Gilberta Andersona (Ian Holm), který má jejímu manželovi pomoci překonat pocity k milence a najít smysl v novém dezorientovaném životě, ale postupně si uvědomí, že muž, kterého znala a milovala, je nedosažitelný. Stejně jako minulost, po které on touží.
